Tempe Arizona Information & History

The first settlers to move to the Tempe area were Hispanic families from southern Arizona. They helped construct the first two irrigation canals, the Kirkland-McKinney Ditch and the San Francisco Canal, and they started many small farms in the area. The town was named Tempe in 1879. Lord Darrell Duppa, an Englishman who helped establish Phoenix, is credited with suggesting the name. The sight reminded him of the Vale of Tempe in ancient Greece.

As more farmers came to settle in the Valley, the Tempe Irrigating Canal Company provided the necessary water for there crops and livestock. Crops of wheat, barley and oats ensured a steady business for the Hayden Mill. The milled flour was hauled to forts and other settlements throughout the territory.

Today Tempe is known as an All American City. This is largely in part because of the city’s progressive attitude. Tempe manages to blend business and pleasure perfectly to create a city that is rich in work and play. Recreational opportunities flourish no matter the area you are in and the same can be said for employment opportunities. Tempe offers a quality of life that is unlike any other city you will find. That could be why Tempe is Arizona’s 6 th largest city.

There is a wide-range of homes in Tempe. More than 47% of its housing units are single-family homes, 52% of which are owner-occupied. Multi-family housing dominates the northern area of the city. These are located near the central business district and Arizona State University campus. In Tempe’s southern regions, subdivisions present elegant homes built around several beautiful lakes. Several areas of homes appeal to highly placed corporate executives, among them Carver Ranch Estates and Buena Vista.

Downtown Tempe is a cultural center in its own right. The spring and Fall Festivals of the Arts each draw nearly 250,000 people that enjoy a variety of foods and free live entertainment. The events are held the first weekend of December and March and are the second-largest art festivals in the nation. Downtown Tempe is also the place for laughs with the Improv, a branch of New York’s famed comedy club.

Childs play, a professional company of adult actors, takes the form of theater for young people into new realm. Founded in 1977, the group has performed for more than 750,000 children and adults throughout the Southwest. Childs play’s home is the Tempe Performing Arts Center in downtown Tempe. The Performing Arts Center is also home to Tempe Little Theatre, which presents quarterly plays.

The Kiwanis Park Recreation Center features a heated, indoor-outdoor wave pool with a 120-foot-long double-spiral slide, a raft/tube rental shop, and a newly renovated gymnasium. If that isn't enough for you check out there, tennis sports complex with 15 well lit tennis courts, three outdoor sand volleyball courts, four outdoor soccer fields, softball fields, and a concession area that serves plenty of pleasing goodies.
