Surprise Arizona Information & History

Surprise was nothing more than a gas station and few houses in 1937 when founder, Homer Charles Ludden, subdivided the rural square mile parcel into low-cost home sites for the area’s agricultural workers, naming it after his southeast Nebraska hometown. It was originally El Mirage 2, where those who made good could move up to a nicer neighborhood. Mr. Ludden believed in everyone’s right to own the perfect piece of land to suit their needs.

The story said that if it ever became a real town it would be a surprise. The city was originally formed in 1929 but no surprises occurred when the City incorporated in 1960 with a population of about 1,000. When Del Webb’s highly successful Sun City Grand swelled westward, Surprise stayed a sleepy square-mile stop.

One major reason for the swell in residents is the Sun City Grand adult community. An age restricted community with plans for close to 10,000 homes and nearly 17,000 residents.

Recreation and attractions abound in the Surprise area which includes the Surprise Stadium. The stadium holds spring training annually for the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals. Other attractions include: fairs and festivals, the aquatic center, the Fun Fest, and the MLB legends baseball game.
