Sun City Arizona Information & History

Sun City was founded in 1960 as a master-planned retirement community. The creator is this development has done many in the area. Del E. Webb is also responsible for Sun City’s neighbor, Sun City West. Sun City is the largest retirement community in the nation. The community is famous for its resort retirement lifestyle and has set the standard for other retirement communities to follow.

Sun City is a self-contained community that lacks the majority of stress that a normal community would have. Traffic jams, when they happen, consist of about five cars. Golf carts are legal to drive on the streets in Sun City and that is often what people use to ride around town in.

There are many retail centers and restaurants offering a variety of shopping, dining and a mix of other services. The town is unincorporated and depends on Maricopa County for services such police, fire, and water.

Eleven golf courses and seven recreation centers provide swimming, tennis, and bowling. The Lakeview Recreation Center even has a lake for fishing. There are another seven golf courses in Sun City West. As the two cities are neighbors they have a long standing tradition of being friendly and hospitable, sharing the resources of there area with the other community.

Volunteering and community activities are strong in Sun City. The Sun City Prides assist Maricopa County in keeping Sun City clean. The group has more than 300 members who help maintain the beauty of the streets in the community. Police protection is provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, augmented by members of the Sheriff's Posse of Sun City, which are men and women who volunteer their services 24 hours a day. The Posse helps prevent crime through neighborhood watch programs, vacation watch, traffic control and home security programs.

Sun City is an age-restricted community. This means that one member of the household must be 45 or older and no one under age 18 is permitted residence. The population is approximately 45,000. If you ask a resident of Sun City what the community means to them, chances are they will tell you that Sun City is a place of cleanliness and friendliness.

It is a place where you can partake in a wide variety of interests and activities. Sun City is an ideal adult community where all residents can be as active as they wish.
