Phoenix Arizona Information & History

The roots of Phoenix date back as far as 300 A.D. which is when the Hohokam Indians settled in the area. The name Phoenix has mythical roots meaning that it rose from the ashes. Some would say this was true as Phoenix rose above the Indian ruins that were once prominent in the area.

The first huge population surge did not occur until around WWII. This was around the time that Phoenix became a very popular retirement destination. Phoenix was also becoming known for winter living destinations at this time.

During the 1980’s Phoenix continued to grow in both population and business. Over this time the area began changing, reinventing itself into what it has truly become today. Today in Phoenix you will see beautiful high rise buildings, arenas, and miles of economic opportunity. Technology opportunities are widespread. Corporations that are both domestic and international have offices located in Phoenix and many smaller businesses wisely choose to call this area there home as well.

Both commercial and investment real estate continues to break records as the years move on. This could be due to many factors. One of which has to do with the fact that Phoenix has a lower cost of living than many other major metropolitan areas. Despite becoming one of the biggest cities in the nation, Phoenix is still a very affordable place to live.

Phoenix wanted to remove the sense of isolation that can be found in rural areas and created the village plan. The plan states that there are distinct neighborhoods within the city that are specifically for residential, retail, and commercial developments. This allows for a stronger sense of neighborhood living.

Some would say that it is almost impossible to get around without a car in Phoenix. In 1985 Phoenix began constructing an enormous freeway system. The main freeway and all connections that have been added on help greatly with cutting down travel times around the city. For those that cannot or chose not to drive the metro area bus system and ride share programs offer excellent alternatives and will see that you get wherever you need to go.

Phoenix is home to more than 20 hospitals in the greater metropolitan area. These include both state of the art hospital facilities and research centers. There are also many specialty clinics that have made Phoenix there home, this would include the highly respected Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Thanks to Phoenix attitude on educational values and their progressive plans the area is a highly respected leader in public education. Basic skills and individual plans are embraced to see that everyone has just what they need to learn properly. There are many opportunities to express yourself including: art programs, physical education and sporting opportunities, foreign languages, and music education. In the primary grades teachers try and teach the basics along with positive reinforcement so children value their self esteem as well as their work habits. The area is filled with many charter and private schools as well so that residents have options of all kinds.

When thinking of higher education the area has many community colleges, universities, technical colleges, specialty classes, and adult education options. Phoenix does their absolute best to leave all options open for people of all shapes and sizes.

For those that do not live in Phoenix, the city is best described by breaking it up in several different areas. The basic area structure of Phoenix includes: North, South, Central, East, and West Phoenix. Each area is distinct, lively, and helps to make the entire city grow.

East Phoenix is filled with homes that were constructed from the 1950’s – 1970’s. The area has a natural feel to it thanks to the Camelback Mountains that decorate this area. The attractions include several amazing restaurants, the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, the Esplanade, and the Biltmore Fashion Park. The neighborhoods that line the streets of East Phoenix all offer an easy feeling about them. The styles and periods of the homes range to suit all styles of personality.

West Phoenix is surrounded by such communities as Glendale, Peoria, and Tolleson. Neighborhoods have been in existence since the 1950’s and offer a strong, mature feel. The homes offer well maintained structures, beautiful landscaping, and wide streets in residential areas. Many new homes, developments, and shopping plazas are beginning to show up in this area to replace the wide open space that was once a large portion of this area.

Central Phoenix is filled with such neighborhoods as the Biltmore area, Arcadia, and the Encanto-Palmcroft area. Neighborhoods feature such amenities as lush estates, mature landscaping, and diverse architecture. The Central area has many precious attractions such as Papago Park, the Phoenix Zoo, museums, and various stadiums.

North Phoenix is filled with many master planned communities and is close to the downtown district. The area once was largely known as a bedroom community but since has begun changing its image and is welcoming and opening to the new commercial activity in the area. The Arrowhead Towne Center Mall has created various shops, dining, and entertainment options in the area.

South Phoenix is filled with diversity no matter where you are looking. The area is home to the world’s largest municipal park, historic neighborhoods, and even a rather upscale master planned community. Residents are close to downtown, which means they are just minutes away from many retail opportunities, sporting events, and other attractions. Residential enclaves are also very popular in this area, some of the more well known include the Raven, a five star area located at the South Mountain Golf Club.

Living in Phoenix is unlike living anywhere in the United States. The area is filled with things to do and everything is represented. Activities from sporting events to cultural events are represented for all ages of the family. Phoenix has their own permanent ballet, opera, and theatre companies. They also have a very accomplished symphony that has made Phoenix their home.

The Orpheum Theatre and the Cricket Pavilion are just two local theatres that show everything from Broadway shows to local works of art. There are many fine galleries in the area as well that include The Phoenix Art Museum and the world famous Heard Museum.
