Maricopa Arizona History & InformationIn 1857, Maricopa was originally called Maricopa Wells. The town was located about 10 miles from today's city. At the time it was little more than a stage stop and station for the San Antonio and San Diego Mail. Maricopa Wells became a stop along the Butterfield Trail which passed through the town, making the community into a trading center. It offered water, rest, and repairs. The military installed a telegraph in 1873, which helped connect the town to many others through a communication link.
The demise of Maricopa Wells was brought about by the outbreak of the Civil War, which brought about the end of traveling mail carriers. The original plan was for Maricopa Station to become a connection point for the Southern Pacific Railroad, which linked Yuma and Tucson to Phoenix.
The new community was named Maricopaville and many people believed that it had a bright future. Unfortunately, instead of Maricopaville, the town of Tempe was chosen to be on the railroad line, and this ended the prospects for Maricopa Station. The name Maricopa Station was changed to Heaton and it became a railroad siding along the Southern Pacific Railroad.
An extension of the railroad line to Phoenix in 1887 brought the community of Maricopa Junction into existence as the next incarnation of Maricopa. After awhile, “Junction” was dropped from the town's name and Maricopa was born.
Today's Maricopa is located at the southernmost part of Phoenix. Maricopa incorporated as a city in October 2004 and is now one of the fastest growing cities in Arizona. The city is now vibrant and alive with tourist and new residents after a slow beginning or two.
