Glendale Arizona History & Information

Glendale is ranked among Arizona’s largest cities. They are known for established neighborhoods, new constructions, and master planned communities. Glendale is affectionately known as the Antique Capital of Arizona by statewide newspapers. Glendale even offers a free town trolley ride to discover yesterday’s charm. Glendale offers everything imaginable in a blend of Old West and New Economy. It's one of the fastest growing Arizona cities, yet they remain true to well-preserved charm. Located just 20 miles from Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport, Glendale is accessible to most major Arizona cities by way of the highways.

The city of Glendale is the anchoring city of the Western Valley. Glendale proudly boasts a prime economic base along with an impressing and stellar array of amenities as well as a stable property value. Glendale was originally a farming community that has rapidly grown into an economic center for growth and change for the city and those that call the area home.

Eight major employment centers that range from professional to technological industries are located in the central region of Glendale. The military and Luke Air Force Base also happen to be one of the largest employers for the city of Glendale, employing 5,000 of the area’s residents.

Glendale is home to several excellent public schools as well as several private options. Higher learning opportunities include: ASU West Campus, Glendale Community College, as well as several small institutions that are learning specific.

Historic Downtown Glendale has been named by USA Today & Sunset Magazine as one of the country's ten best places for antique shopping but savvy shoppers also find a medley of imports, jewelry, art, crafts, and bath and body accessories. In fact, Historic Downtown Glendale is actually two neighborhoods. The two neighborhoods add to the beauty of the area and both offer there own distinct style, the Historic Catlin Court offers white picket fences and mature shade trees, gas lit street lamps, quaint antique shops and more. While the Old Towne Section boasts brick-trimmed sidewalks and glowing gaslights leading all the way to the famous antique stores. The neighborhoods span 10 blocks which can easily be traveled in an afternoon.

The city of Glendale is home to 50 parks that include the Historic Saguaro Ranch Park and the Thunderbird Park. Art lovers will take delight in Glendale’s Amphitheater and the Theater Works Company.

The Historic Sahuaro Ranch consists of 13 original buildings and a huge rose garden. Palm trees wave above the red brick facade of the Main House, and peacocks roam the grounds where chickens used to graze. Known as the "Showplace of the Valley," Historic Sahuaro Ranch offers exhibits and tours to keep the history alive.

Another popular attraction is Cerreta Candy Company. The owners give tours Monday through Thursday, during which visitors receive samples. Self-guided tours are available every day but Sunday. Just before Valentine's Day, Cerreta sponsors the annual three-day Chocolate Affaire, where the delectable, sweet stuff is on display in many forms, including Arizona's largest chocolate heart, ranging upward of 300 pounds.
