Gilbert Arizona Information & History

Gilbert , Arizona is a fairly young community located in central Arizona. Incorporated on July 6, 1920, Gilbert may be relatively new but despite there age they have seen tremendous growth during there time as a community.

At one point in the early 1900’s, the A.E.R (Arizona Eastern Railway) asked for donations that would establish a line between Phoenix and Florence. A rail siding was established on property owned by William Gilbert. The siding eventually became known as Gilbert. Gilbert was a prime farming community, fueled by the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals.

Gilbert is known for preserving the grassroots farming communities that were so popular in the past. Gilbert was once known, during WWI, as being the nation’s hay capital, as Gilbert would ship hay all over the United States. Gilbert continued to grow and was a center for cattle, sheep, dairy, and other forms of agriculture. In the later decades of the century Gilbert went through a rapid growth period. Since that time hundreds of businesses have relocated to the Gilbert area. Thanks to these businesses, thousands of jobs have been added to the economic base that Gilbert is home to.

Gilbert is proud to be known as one of the premier business and living areas in the Southwest. It is all thanks to residents and civic leaders that see the need for a business community, wide open spaces, and a beautiful recreational space to set them apart from other communities. It is this attitude that will continue to allow Gilbert to grow. It will encourage developments and opportunities to come into the area and allow Gilbert residents the pleasure of having all their needs met in their town.

Freestone Park is located in the Gilbert area and provides 65 acres of bike and jogging paths. The park is home to picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, and even a lighted softball field. Resident’s spend many days enjoying an afternoon fishing in Freestones well stocked lakes or horseback riding on one of the beautifully maintained paths.

Gilbert has been labeled as a Community of Excellence and is very proud of their title. Every year the area continues to grow and attempt to become more beautiful and enriching then the year before. Gilbert has the right attitude and it’s the attitude that will continue to make that label a truth for many years to come.
