Fixing your Credit Report

If you are planning to buy a new home your credit is one of the first things a lender is going to look at. Your credit history represents your character. The idea behind this being is that if you have had several problems paying your debts before how can someone trust you with as much responsibility as a house and a very large debt?

A lender will check your credit looking at your history and a score which tells them numerous things. These things include your debt to income ratio, if your credit cards are up to limit and used frequently, and even if you apply for credit often. These things all change your score.

If you are checking your credit report and you see something that should not be on there you will need to have it removed. It could be causing negative effects to your credit and you may not have even known it was there. You may be wondering how you get it off there. Well that is what this article is all about - How to fix your credit and remove any information that is wrong from your record.

The first thing you should do if you notice something disputable on your credit report is to let the credit reporting agency know. You will need to have a paper printed copy of your credit report so that you can highlight whatever is wrong. This is very important. Once you have highlighted what’s wrong with your report you should write a letter to the credit reporting agency.

If it is on one credit report that does not mean it’s on all three companies however it could be. If it is you will need to follow this process for each company. Let the company know why you are disputing the charges and ask them that they do an investigation to resolve the problem and have it removed from your credit report.

If you have proof to show there has been a mistake you should send it in as that will speed up the investigation process. Make sure that you send your package to the credit company through certified mail and ask for proof that they have received it. You should send a similar packet to the company that has charged you unfairly.

Once this has been done a formal investigation will take place where the credit reporting agency will verify your information with your creditor. If the creditor has a problem verifying that the entry is correct then the agency will remove it. As soon as the investigation has closed the credit reporting agency is obligated to send you a free report showing you where the changes were made to your credit report.

It is up to you to request that the correct credit report is sent out to the people that had viewed the error in the last six months. If you request that it is up to the credit report agency to send these reports out free of charge to you.

Bankruptcy will remain on your credit report for ten years before it will be removed. Other credit issues will remain for seven years as long as there is no activity. For example, if you have a credit card and are making payments, once you have made your last payment it will remain on your credit for seven years once the last payment has been made.

If you have any questions about this process or need any help finding out who to contact to receive your free credit report, please let us know. I will be more than willing to do anything I can to help you.
