Casa Grande Arizona Information & HistoryCasa Grande is a beautiful city located in southwest Pinal County. The community was founded in 1879. Casa Grande is home to some of the most beautiful weather in Arizona. The desert heat is present all year round, with very little precipitation.
Casa Grande was named after the famous Hohokam Indian Ruins. The word Casa Grande means “Large of Grand Home” in Spanish. The Ruins are actually located 20 miles from the city of Casa Grande. The Ruins mark the point directly between Phoenix and Tucson.
Today, Casa Grande is the largest community in Pinal County. It was officially incorporated in 1915. Since then, the community has attracted many visitors. At one point, the community was the stomping ground for many of Hollywood’s elite, including John Wayne.
When the city was first incorporated it relied on mining and agriculture as its main source of employment. Today, residents and neighbors in nearby communities have a multitude of occupations to choose from in Casa Grande, including: retail, trade, manufacturing, the tourist industry, and governmental positions. Pinal County, as a whole, is a designated Enterprise Zone. This includes Casa Grande.
Casa Grande gets thousands of visitors per year. Many visit during the winter months. The climate and weather make Casa Grande more bearable during the winter months, than many of the cities and states to the North.
A hot spot for tourists and residents is The Casa Grande Valley Historical Museum. The Museum features many artifacts, displays and plenty of information on Casa Grande. The Museum is a collection of the eclectic history of Casa Grande. Thousands of years of history are encapsulated in the Museum. Casa Grande also has a historic railroad station. There is a historic walking tour where you can view the station and other historic buildings in the community.
The more creatively inclined residents of Casa Grande visit The Casa Grande Art Museum where several art shows each year. The shows include works in water color, multimedia, sculpture, and art of the West. Many Arizona artists are featured in these shows. For those that prefer theatre over art, there is a regional theatre group of community players, The Casa Grande Valley Players. The Players offer some of the best theatrics in southern Arizona.
A favorite annual event in Casa Grande is the Arizona State Open Chili championship. The Championship is held every March, and attracts residents from all over Arizona and tourists from across the country.
Residents can enjoy many community activities. The elderly of Casa Grande spend their time between two senior centers where they can meet for community gatherings, bingo, and several other group functions. Sports enthusiasts have several different sporting opportunities. Casa Grande is home to four golf courses, a bowling center, a fitness and racquet club, one swimming pool, an archery range, and rodeo facilities.
The artistically inclined may choose to go to one of two museums or just spend time at the library to read the hottest new literature. Families and nature enthusiasts enjoy the 18 parks in Casa Grande. The majority of these parks have playground equipment, trails for walking, biking, or hiking, softball and other sport fields, and much more.
Casa Grande is also home to the Francisco Grande Hotel and Resort. This beautiful hotel was once the training camps home away from home for the San Francisco Giants, and even John Wayne kept a penthouse here. It was visited frequently by some of the top celebrities in Hollywood throughout the 20th century.
