Avondale was founded in 1840 by Billy Moore, a cowboy. Moore settled up a 200-acre plot of land that was located along a dusty wagon road travelers used to get from Phoenix to California. Moore was not the first to settle in Avondale. The land has a rich history dating back thousands of years as various tribes lived peacefully throughout the West Valley. Avondale was officially incorporated in 1946.

Located on the southern edge of Avondale is the Phoenix International Raceway. This provides a wonderful regional attraction located a short distance from the residential areas of Avondale. The Raceway hosts a number of events throughout the year including both Indy car and NASCAR races.
