Apache Junction, AZ Information & History

Apache Junction is a rapidly growing community that is surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the state of Arizona. At least 22,000 residents call Apache Junction home. Apache Junction is the youngest of the East Valley Communities and it is also the most eastern of all the cities in the valley.

Apache Junction was founded in 1922 by Mr. George Cleveland Curtis. Curtis had a dream that the Superstition Mountains would one day have a modern city located at the foot of them. The area was so beautiful that George Curtis wanted to share the beauty with the world. Today, his dream has come true as Apache Junction continues to grow and prosper.

Apache Junction is located at the junction of highways 60, 80, and 89. It is also located on the historic Apache Trail. It is only 40 minutes (25 miles) away from the heart of Phoenix. The fastest way for Apache Junction residents to travel through the greater metro area is by way of the Superstition Highway and the loop freeway system.

Apache Junction is a prime area for tourist travel. During the winter months, thousands of people visit Apache Junction from all over the world. The climate is ideal, and the scenery is breathtaking. The community serves as the gateway to the Superstition Mountains and Tonto National Forest. The area is home to the Superstition Wilderness, the Apache Trail, the Old West Highway, and the Salt River Lakes.

Apache Junction has many modern conveniences so residents do not have to go far to serve their daily needs. National and local chain stores, restaurants, banks, hotels, and various schools serve the community.

Thanks to being located on a higher elevation and in an area filled with wide open spaces, Apache Junction is cooler in temperature then most of the community’s East Valley neighbors. The economy of Apache Junction is comprised of mainly recreational and tourist opportunities.

As is true with most of Arizona, Apache Junction is home to many historical treasures. The land dates back nearly 5,000 years, when the first settlers arrived. Nearly 2,000 years ago the Hohokam and Mogollon tribes successfully made their home on land that is now Apache Junction, and in the nearby mountains. The tribes eventually disappeared from the area, and nearly 1,000 years later the Salado Indian tribe successfully called the valley home for over 400 years.

There are many rumors and myths circulating about the Superstition Mountains. That is actually how the Mountains were named. The highest peak is 3,000 feet, forming a beautiful backdrop for the city of Apache Junction. The Mountains and the area surrounding them are considered sacred by the American Indians. Many people have died as they try to make their way through the mountains looking for treasure and gold.

The Lost Dutchman State Park is located near Apache Junction, in the Superstition Mountains. The park is said to be home to the Lost Dutchman Mine. This legendary mine is the most famous lost mine of all time. For nearly 130 years treasure hunters, gold enthusiasts, and prospectors have searched the mountains where “veins of gold at least 14 inches thick” run through thick rocks in the mine.

Some say the mine is just a legend, but others say that it is a gold “mine” just waiting to be found. Either way, the only person who knows the truth of the mine, is Jacob Waltz, a German immigrant, who purportedly found the mine, and kept 48 lbs. of gold ore from the mine under his bed. Waltz died in 1889, and he took with him, the truth of the Lost Dutchman Mine.

The Lost Dutchman Park offers many recreational opportunities for both residents of Apache Junction and visitors to the area. Whether you explore the various hiking trails, or just enjoy the view there are plenty of things to be explored throughout the Park.
